UK vote on remaining in EU a foregone conclusion

Re: “Timing will be everything in Britain’s EU referendum,” Opinion, January 29.

Matt Qvortrup gives an insightful analysis of why the pro-Europe British prime minister should hold his “in-out” vote as soon as possible, but the issue may be decided already.
When David Cameron agreed to a referendum to try and spike the electoral appeal of the UK Independence Party, nobody had any notion of the upcoming Muslim “invasion”.
The woeful inability of the EU to police its own borders and the awesome policy confusion among its leaders mean that this referendum will be decided on factors that have nothing to do with the real economic issues. The gut-reaction result of “immigrants out” is a foregone conclusion.
In a diary entry, written just before the collapse of Germany in 1945, Dr Goebbels wrote, “It may take 100 years before Europe comes to its senses”.
It is a frightening thought that the propaganda chief might have exaggerated the time scale required.
