British Prime Minister Boris Johnson urged people in England, where no new social restrictions have been introduced before the end of the year, to exercise caution in their celebrations. He also asked people living in Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland, where tighter coronavirus restrictions are in place, to follow the COVID-19 guidance.

Earlier Wednesday, a further 131 cases of the new Omicron COVID variant have been reported in Britain. Scientists have called on the government to take more action and are urging people to be more cautious as Omicron cases continue to rise in the country.

John Swinney, deputy first minister of Scotland, has confirmed there is no travel history in "some" of these cases. That suggests there has been at least a level of community transmission, which makes controlling the variant more difficult.
