US Immigration and visa system need a gigantic fix

Re: “Diplomacy and transparency missing from US visa service”, Have Your Say, yesterday.

I’m not sure why Mr Harris has chosen to single me out when I agree with most of what he says. The US visa system is a mess and there is no other way to put it. That I had to invoke the name of the then Secretary of State to get a visa should have been unnecessary and was borne of frustration with the system. Further, I was tired of dishing out a lot of money for what should have been a simple matter of a tourist visa for my sister-in-law.
The issue of American views on Asians is a very separate animal and the insinuations made by Mr Harris are unfounded and untrue. Are there bigots here and there? Of course. Do the vast mainstream of America harbour those views? I think not.
As one who spent his formative years growing up in Japan, has Japanese family members, worked for a Japanese company and am married to a Thai, I think I know a bit about the subject.
That the US Immigration needs a gigantic fix is no secret to anyone that follows American politics. The US Department of State is another nightmare of cronyism, and hopefully Mr Tillerson will drain the Foggy Bottom swamp of entrenched elites and start making some much-needed and hard-nosed changes.
A friend in Kabul just wrote me this morning that some of the staff at our embassy there were crying when Hillary lost. That’s how bad it is. Need I say more?
