NRSA to propose changes to kamnan election process

NRSA to propose changes to kamnan election process

The National Reform Steering Assembly (NRSA) plans to propose changes to the appointment of tambon chiefs, or kamnans, and village heads across Thailand as part of its political reform proposals.

The proposals, scheduled to be tabled to the NRSA meeting for endorsement on Monday, suggest kamnans be elected directly by villagers, not village heads as at present. They must serve a term of only five years, not until their retirement at 60.
Village heads who are still in the posts can continue serving their terms until they reach 60, but after that direct elections must be held to find new village heads who can be in a term of only five years like kamnans.
Related laws must be amended accordingly, the NRSA suggests.
