BMA’s first hospital for elderly to partially open this year

The first hospital for the elderly run by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration will partially open later this year, BMA deputy governor Thaweesak Lertpraphan said.

Thaweesak was speaking to reporters after inspecting the progress of the construction of the hospital in Bang Khun Thien district.
He said overall construction was now 93.29 per cent complete.
Construction is being carried out in six parts. The first, the main building housing the medical centre or Building 1, which will have five floors plus an underground floor, is progressing fast.
The inpatient building (Building 2), which features 7 floors and a rooftop area near a large pond is 93.94 per cent finished.
The third part, the rehabilitation compound for the elderly, which comprises eight houses and a multi-purpose building (Building 3), is 78.28 per cent complete.
The fourth, the boarding house for staff, which includes the service management office (Building 4) and is a triangular building with 7 floors plus an underground floor, is 95.23 per cent finished.
The fifth building, which will be used for storage of medical gasses and garbage, is 98.22 per cent complete, while the final part, which involves the construction of roads around the building is 67.85 per cent complete.
Thaweesak said construction is scheduled for completion by August 10 and medical services will be partially available late this year.
He said the BMA has yet to recruit personnel to provide comprehensive care of the elderly at the new hospital and added that the Administration’s Public Works Department has been instructed to monitor the construction so that the works are carried out in accordance with the schedule.

According to the Department of Older Persons, Ministry of Social Development and Human Security (MSO), the number of people aged 60 and over in Thailand in 2018 stood at about 10.67 million out of a total population of 66.4 million. In Bangkok alone, there are some 1.02 million elderly persons.
