Thailand fields first female candidate from Asean for election to UN law body

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will field for the first time a female candidate for election to the United Nations’ International Law Commission ( ILC) for the period 2023-2027.

Elections for the ILC will take place in November this year.

“Dr Vilawan Mangklatanakul, director-general at the Department of Treaties and Legal Affairs, is our most suitable candidate who has both readiness and strong interest in international laws,” said ministry spokesman Tanee Saengrat on the ministry’s official Facebook page.

“If elected, she aims to push the legal aspects relating to rising sea level and public healthcare, which are among the top concerns of Thai and global citizens.”

Tanee added that having a Thai representative in the  ILC will benefit the country in many aspects, such as demonstrating the potential of Thai people on an international stage, representing Thailand’s views and experiences in drafting international laws, as well as helping us understand the international relationship of member countries at a deeper level.

Vilawan is not only the first female candidate from Thailand to run for the  ILC, she is also the first female candidate from Asean.
