Myanmar’s Acting President says nation faces pressure from major powers, vows to further strengthen ties with China
Myanmar is facing financial, political, and economic pressures from powerful nations, Acting President and Chairman of the State Security and Peace Commission Senior General Min Aung Hlaing said, adding that Myanmar-China relations, now at their strongest, will be further elevated.
He made the remarks at a press conference with Chinese media on September 6 in Chengdu, Sichuan Province. Senior General Min Aung Hlaing emphasised that Myanmar and China are close neighbours sharing over 1,300 miles of border and centuries of friendship, pledging deeper cooperation across all sectors.
He noted that many powerful countries use political, economic, financial, and even military pressure against others, citing US sanctions on China as an example. Myanmar, too, has experienced such pressure. He welcomed Chinese President Xi Jinping’s five-point Global Governance Initiative (GGI) presented at the SCO, which advocates equality, international law, cooperation, people-centred approaches, and practical results.
Marking 75 years of diplomatic ties, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing stressed that Myanmar and China are “family-like neighbours” and strategic partners, with mutual stability and development benefiting each other. He said current relations are at their highest level but will continue to be strengthened for greater cooperation.
He also expressed interest in China’s green development policies, saying Myanmar will adopt similar practices through Chinese collaboration. Concluding his week-long official visit to China, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing returned to Myanmar on the evening of September 6.
