TMD says Tomorrow.io trial ended in July after platform fell short
Thailand’s Meteorological Department says it stopped using Tomorrow.io after a free pilot found the platform needed technical improvements and adaptation for Thai conditions.
The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has clarified that it stopped using the Tomorrow.io National Resilience Platform after completing a pilot test, saying the system still required technical improvements and adaptation to Thailand’s specific needs.
The clarification comes amid reports that the government has approved THB497 million for a follow-on Tomorrow.io project in fiscal 2027. Digital Economy and Society Minister Chaichanok Chidchob said on September 28 that the Cabinet had approved the budget to use satellite data and artificial intelligence to enhance weather forecasting.
TMD Director-General Sugunyanee Yavinchan reported the results in an urgent letter dated July 14, 2026, to the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society. The report followed the minister’s policy to explore high-resolution, AI-assisted local weather forecasting.
Pilot ran from December to February
The Proof of Concept (PoC) involved cooperation between TMD, The Tomorrow Companies Inc and BPLC Co Ltd, Tomorrow.io’s representative in Thailand.
The trial assessed whether the platform’s Microwave Sounder satellite technology could be combined with TMD data to improve monitoring, detection and warnings for severe weather and emergency conditions.
The formal PoC ran for three months from December 2025 to February 2026. The department evaluated the platform during that period to assess its potential for meteorological data management, forecasting and disaster monitoring.
The developer subsequently continued allowing the department to use the platform free of charge until June 30, 2026.
TMD says system showed promise but needed improvement
TMD concluded that Tomorrow.io delivered useful results to some extent, but was not yet sufficiently complete for continued use in its tested form.
The department said further technical improvements were needed to make the data more comprehensive, while platform functions would also have to be adapted to suit Thailand’s operational requirements.
TMD therefore ended use of the trial platform and reported the findings to the Digital Economy and Society minister.
