Hail risk in upper Thailand as South faces very heavy rain

Upper Thailand faces thundershowers and hail on November 5–7, followed by heavy to very heavy rain and flash flood risks in the South on November 7–9.

  • Upper Thailand is forecast to experience thundershowers, gusty winds, and hail from November 5-7.
  • Southern Thailand is expected to face heavy to very heavy rain from November 7-9, creating a risk of flash floods and forest runoff.
  • The adverse weather is caused by a high-pressure cold air mass from China, which will affect the Northeast first before spreading.
  • Mariners are warned of waves exceeding two meters in the Gulf of Thailand and Andaman Sea in areas with thundershowers.

Thundershowers, gusty winds, hail and isolated heavy rain are forecast for upper Thailand from November 5–7, 2026, while the South faces heavy to very heavy rain and flash flood risks from November 7–9.

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) outlined the conditions in its third weather advisory, issued at 5pm on November 2.

Northeast to be affected first

The unsettled weather will affect the Northeast first before reaching the North, Central region including Bangkok and surrounding provinces, and East.

Residents are advised to avoid open areas, sheltering under large trees and standing near unsecured billboards during thundershowers and gusty winds.

A fresh high-pressure system, or cold air mass, from China is expected to spread over upper Thailand and the South China Sea, strengthening the easterly winds prevailing over Thailand and the Gulf of Thailand.

Southern rainfall raises flash flood risks

Rainfall is expected to increase across the South, with heavy rain in many areas and isolated very heavy rain.

Accumulated rainfall could trigger flash floods and forest runoff, particularly in foothill areas near waterways and in low-lying locations.

Waves to exceed two metres in thundershowers

Waves in the Gulf of Thailand and Andaman Sea are expected to exceed two metres in areas with thundershowers. Mariners should navigate cautiously and avoid sailing through affected areas.

The public is advised to plan daily activities and travel carefully and continue following TMD advisories. Updates are available through the department’s website or by calling 0-2399-4012-13 or 1182, 24 hours a day.

The next advisory is scheduled for 5am on November 3.
