In a discussion with U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday, Chinese President Xi Jinping raised the issue of the recent conflict between Thailand and Cambodia. The two countries had just signed a peace agreement in Malaysia on Sunday (October 26), with Trump also signing the document.
According to Bloomberg, while opening remarks at such meetings are typically polite and focused on broad principles, Xi’s decision to bring up this issue is significant, especially given the timing, as Trump had recently stated that China had not been involved in facilitating the peace talks.
Xi, speaking through an interpreter, said:
“Mr President, you place great importance on global peace and are keen to resolve hot issues in the region. I appreciate your significant involvement in the recent Gaza ceasefire agreement. During your visit to Malaysia, you witnessed the signing of the Joint Declaration on Peace along the Cambodia-Thailand border, and you provided your support. China has assisted Cambodia and Thailand in our own way to resolve the border dispute, and we continue to promote peace talks to address other pressing issues in the region.”
