A chance to reform the Tourism Ministry

SATURDAY, JANUARY 26, 2013

Despite the tragic death of Tourism Minister Chumpol Silpa-archa from the Chart Thai Pattana Party early this week, I still feel this ministry has been poorly managed over the past few years.

The ministry’s performance lagged far behind the pace of growth, and thus the complexity, of the tourism industry itself.
The recent success story of Thailand’s tourism was so much so that the government had to reopen Don Muang Airport to help ease the crippling burden of overcrowding that Suvarnabhumi Airport was already facing, after only a few years in service.
Hence, it would be better for the country if the government seized this opportunity to put people with more knowledge of the tourism industry in charge of this ministry.
Prime Minister Yingluck, stop using this ministry as a bargaining chip with your smaller coalition partners, please.
