As rustic as it is simple, Kradan Island Resort brings to mind Thailand’s seaside back in the 1970s – a time when the beaches themselves were the destinations, not overly designed and pricey hotels. Located off the Trang coast on a pristine island in the Andaman Sea, Kradan Island Resort gives the visitor exactly what the resorts of the ’70s offered: a bamboo-stitched bungalow under swaying coconut palms for less than Bt1,000 a night.
Named after the island itself, Kradan Island Resort is tucked away at the north of the island facing a private white sand beach and crystal clear water.
The resort has 11 bungalows facing the beach, all single room facilities for one person or a couple. Just behind are the family bungalows, again all facing the beach and sea but with two floors, some with a balcony on the higher level.
The resort also offers a few bungalows at the back for the budget traveller with shared outside bathroom.
The rooms and interiors are where things get truly basic. They consist of nothing more than a mattress, stretching across the room, a bed, a bedsheet and a mosquito net. A few pictures on the wall complete the interior decoration. But you don’t come to Kradan Island Resort to stay inside the room. The action happens outside.
The crystal-clear water is perfect for snorkelling and a variety of colourful fish dart in and out of the coral reefs.
It’s possible to jump into a sea kayak and head out to the west side of the island for even more isolated beaches or wander along the path to Sunset Beach to enjoy the sensational sunset over the Andaman Sea.
Otherwise, just tie the hammock to the bungalow poles, and listen to the emerald water lapping the white, powdery beach. Look to the horizon of endless blue skies by day, the sun setting in the beautiful alluring colours, and as darkness falls gaze into the deep starlit night.
Kradan Island Resort serves food and drink all day at its sea-view restaurant – where everyone chills out after the sunset. The resort even runs a cooking class for those who fancy themselves as chefs.
This resort offers a perfect getaway – just don’t expect the comforts of a fashionable boutique hotel.
