One of the top destinations in Southeast Asia, Singapore has introduced a wealth of new attractions in recent years, among them Universal Studios Singapore, Singapore Flyer, Marina Bay Sands and Gardens by the Bay. The Singapore government has also cooperated with the private sector in organising several activities and events to draw more tourists from all corners of the globe.
On such event is the Standard Charter Marathon Singapore 2012 (SCMS 2012). Recognised as an international running event for Singaporeans and tourists alike, the past years have seen many foreign runners fly in from Europe, Australia, Japan and even Africa to compete. Last year, the SCMS was awarded Gold Label certification by the International Association of Athletic Federations (IAAF), raising it to level of such international marathons such Berlin, London and New York City. This year, 53,000 runners joined the event across various categories of Full Marathon, Half Marathon, 10km and Kids Dash. Each route was different, with runners pounding through Singapore city and taking in such iconic landmarks as Orchard Road, Universal Studios Singapore, Sentosa, Singapore Flyer and Gardens by the Bay.
For the full marathon route, runners started at 5am, kicking off their race on Orchard Road, home to all the famous shopping malls. The route took them through the business district of the city, past the symbolic Merlion then, at the 36 km mark, through the newest attraction, Gardens by the Bay, where they were surrounded by trees and flowers.
The half marathon route started at Resorts World Sentosa, the integrated resort on Sentosa island. Reaching the 7 km mark, the runners turned into Universal Studio Singapore where they were cheered on by Betty Boop and the Sesame Street muppets. At the 17 km marker, they passed by Marina Bay Sands, a luxury destination for entertainment, business and shopping. A few kilometres later, they ran through the Singapore Flyer.
The 10km runners took in the sights of Marina Bay and Singapore Flyer while the young runners ran across Marina Bay from where they could view the Merlion as well as the adult routes.
If you plan to travel to Singapore, maybe it’s worth training for at least the 10km run. Joining the marathon is a great and different way to see the city.
