We are planning to go to Koh Samui for five days in August, and would then like to spend a couple of

We are currently looking at Koh Tao and Koh Pha-ngan. We're after a laid-back stay with good local food and some diving. Which one do you recommend? Thanks in advance! Heather

Despite being relatively near Samui, Koh Pha-ngan and Koh Tao are very different in character. Both are easily accessible by ferries, which run all day. The journey from Samui to Koh Pha-ngan takes a mere 20 minutes by high-speed catamaran and up to one hour on a normal ferry. It takes two hours to get to Koh Tao, as the ferries operating on this route are required to stop at Koh Pha-ngan to drop off and pick up passengers.
As you’ve mentioned diving, Koh Tao is the better option. This is because the island is very diving oriented with several dive shops from which to choose. It boasts many beaches, some near the town and others remote and quiet. It's not difficult to get around and find one that fits the bill.
Although Koh Pha-ngan is famous for its full-moon parties, you can also find quiet beach areas hidden all over the island.
In terms of local food, just go to where the local people live. Probably the best local food is on Koh Samui itself, as there are many villages with decent restaurants. Just ask a local for his or her recommendation. Koh Pha-ngan has fewer local eateries and these are located in and around Thong Sala, the main town near the ferry pier. I think Koh Tao is also similar in this regard, as it is dominated by international food rather than local eats. Most of the restaurants are in the Mae Haad and Sai Ree areas.

My husband and I plan are returning to Thailand for the second time in November. We will start by spending four days in Chiang Mai then head off to the beach for another four days. We have been to Phuket and would like to try a new destination. We want somewhere with gorgeous beaches and a good choice of luxury accommodation.  Thanks, Momo

For a combination of luxury accommodation and wonderful beaches, you should check out Koh Lanta, a big island to the south of Krabi. November is also a good time for visiting this island in the Andaman Sea. There are numerous beaches and at the centre of the action is Saladan where most travellers arrive by ferry. You will find plenty of restaurants here, but the beach at Saladan is not the greatest compared to other areas. The whole island has a good range of middle and upper class accommodation. Beaches are not crowded and the best is probably Kantiang beach.
Part of the island belongs to the Mu Koh Lanta National Park, which was established in 1990 as the 62nd national park of Thailand. If you enjoy marine activities like diving, be sure to visit Hin Daeng Hin Muang, which is one of the best dive sites. Snorkelling sites can be found at nearby islands too.
Have a great time!
