Every November and December, the Irrawaddy dolphin, the Pacific humpback dolphin, the Bottlenose dolphin and other species of the same large family visit the estuary to feast on the catfish. And they don’t mind witnesses to their breakfast either, making this an ideal place for a day trip. The best place to watch the dolphins is from the fishing village of Tha Kham. Boat trips can also be arranged. Call the community-based tourism office at (038) 573 411-8.

Sustainability award for Zeavola
The Zeavola Resort was recently crowned the “World’s Best Sustainable Boutique Hotel” at the World Boutique Hotels ceremony in London. The award was presented at a black-tie event at the Montcalm Hotel in Marble Arch. “It was Zeavola’s night,” enthused general manager Florian Hallermann. “All the team have worked tremendously hard and I am very proud of them all. This is for them.” Located on the shores of Laem Ton beach on Koh Phi Phi, Zeavola is built around a sustainability ethos, with features such as a water-reserve system that includes four deep wells and a reverse osmosis plant to minimise unnecessary water consumption.
