Cabinet tells Finance Ministry to study House panel’s report on casinos project

The Cabinet on Tuesday endorsed a special House committee’s report on the feasibility of opening entertainment complexes with casinos in Thailand.

During their weekly meeting, the Cabinet assigned the Finance Ministry to take up the feasibility report for studying whether and how to implement the proposal of the ad hoc House committee.

The Finance Ministry was given 30 days to finish the study.

Late last month, a House panel chaired by Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat prepared the report and presented it to the House of Representatives for endorsement. The report proposed that the government allow such entertainment complexes to be opened to boost the economy and to prevent Thais from spending money in illicit casinos across the country.

The House panel’s report stated that the proposed entertainment complexes would feature casinos, hotels, shopping malls and amusement parks, and would each require at least 100 billion baht in investment. Julapun said he believed the complexes would create jobs, boost tourism, and curb illegal gambling.

After it won the House’s endorsement, Julapun sent the report to Cabinet for consideration.
