The accident took place at 4.20am near the Chatuchot Road section of Expressway 1 and police arrived to find the wreckage of a Honda City car with two women trapped inside.
The driver was crushed to death by the car’s console, while the passenger was found seriously injured with blood streaming from her face. The women’s identities were not available at the scene of the accident, though police believe them to be in the 20-30 age range.
Investigators say the car was on the expressway at the Sukhapiban 5 side heading towards Rama IX Road. The car then reportedly swerved and drove against the traffic for about 3 kilometres before crashing into a temporary barrier and falling off the expressway.
It is believed the driver may have changed her mind after paying the toll fee and decided to back the car instead of getting off the expressway at the next exit.
The bodies will be sent for an autopsy before the cause of the accident can be determined.
It was initially reported that the two women had attended a Songkran event held at an entertainment venue on Hatairat Road, which links Bangkok with Pathum Thani.
