The government, in response to the escalating conflict, has ordered preparations for an evacuation plan for Thai citizens from neighbouring countries and is closely monitoring the situation.
After a meeting of the National Security Council (NSC), Srettha revealed that discussions on Thursday revolved extensively around the situation in Israel. The current information indicates that the conflict is trending towards regional expansion, not limited to the dispute between the two parties or only in neighbouring countries like Jordan and Lebanon. Currently, there is cyber warfare and the use of drones involved, which are signals that the conflict could expand.
"We are concerned that the conflict may spread to neighbouring countries, and it needs to be assessed whether the evacuation of Thai labourers in these neighbouring countries was necessary. Regarding Thai labourers in Israel, if there was a need for them to return to Thailand, they should be informed to facilitate the evacuation process," Srettha said.
The economic impact of the ongoing conflict has already been discussed with relevant ministers in the economic sector, especially the repercussions for Thailand if the conflict in Israel expands.
On Wednesday, he held discussions with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Pirapan Salirathavibhaga concerning the energy price situation. In the near future, the Ministry of Energy will propose an energy security plan for consideration. This is deemed essential because an expansion of the conflict could significantly affect this aspect.
"Although the economic relationship with the groups of countries, which could get involved in the conflict, may be limited, caution is necessary,” Srettha said. “What is more crucial is the violence that may impact the Thai people residing in those countries. There must be preparedness for the future.”
