Thailand Digital Transformation Readiness 2022 Report (Part 2/2)

The Insights

Strategy dimension:

“We’re busy competing inside the company and trying to be the best team. I think we’re losing the focus from our customers.”

Interestingly, insight interviews revealed that their companies’ strategy in respect to digital transformation were focused on small projects for sub-units and varied from department to department. They have been competing internally with each other for quite sometimes.

People Dimension:

“I have no time for new things now. Still can’t even make it for my daily tasks!”

“We don’t have enough talent”

People still stand as a prominent factor driving success for the transformation. A level of 2.12 showed in the survey result for people dimension which is the lowest score here. This means the company has identified the skills and capabilities needed but still in an attempt to manage to make it. This phenomenon was supported by insight interviews that people in organizations were struggling to get approval for further training and education due to budget cuts and not enough support from the top. Also, they lack time to learn new skills since the present tasks are overwhelming and endless meetings that need to be joined.

Organization Dimension:

I feel that the actions that people in the company are now doing are not incorporated with the vision of the company.

A good digital strategy must support a long-term vision and a digital plan for achieving its business goals. Alignment is the key. Using technology to blend people, process, and strategy focusing on customer experience would create mature digital business. Due to an unclear vision and roadmap, business lost its way in the digital transformation journey. Leaders do not know where to go and what to support. Followers tired of following.

Culture Dimension:

“My company is among the biggest in our industry. If we keep doing the way we used to do, I think It should be fine. Change is not necessary at the moment.”

With the lack of collaborative culture, the company finds it challenging to overcome the silo issues. This could jeopardize the readiness for digitalization. Also, the success trap of past achievement still permeates throughout the business which creates a reluctance to drive innovation for change.

What Digital Capability is Needed?

Without knowing the current status of digitalisation of a company, the development area or what action should be taken next would be difficult to identify.

Many companies have lost their way by trying to repeat any practices taken by successful transformed businesses. Each company has its own unique characteristics, they are under different contexts, different backgrounds, different industries, different customers which would never drive the same result.

Copying from an expert would never be an answer but learning to apply and create new initiatives in your own way would be beneficial business at it most.
