"Referring to the government's concern over possible power blackout or brownout at some areas, on April 5 when power reserves will fall to the lowest level manufacturing plants are urged to reduce power consumption. Toyota is committed to full cooperation," Kyoichi Tanada, president of TMT, said in a statement.
All the three plants in Thailand will be suspended, with extra production being planned for April 4. Tanada said that TMT has also discussed with all suppliers on such cooperation, to suspend production or reduce output, for concrete and wide-scale energy saving.
TMT is Thailand's biggest auto maker, with annual capacity of nearly 700,000 units.
The Energy Ministry earlier urged the manufacturing sector, which consumes about 35 per cent of total electricity, to suspend production on the day when power reserve is expected to fall below 800 megawatt. The reserve should stand above 1,500MW, to ensure national power security, it said.
