Central Group says its La Rinascente luxury retail chain in Italy saw sales grow by 13 per cent year on year in the first quarter. Thai tourists are among the top 10 groups of patrons in terms of spending.

Central Group is confident that Thai shoppers will continue to be impressed by La Rinascente’s products and five-star services, as well as tempting promotions and reasonable prices.

Central Group acquired La Rinascente in 2011.

"At the Milan branch, 34 per cent of the revenue came from tourists, with Chinese being the biggest market, followed by Russians," said Yuwadee Chirathivat, chief executive of Central’s department store group. "Asian tourists such as Japanese, Hong Kong people and Taiwanese are also among the top 10, as well as Thai tourists."

The company says Thais go to La Rinascente because they have confidence in the products and services offered by Central Group, which employs the same standards globally. Quality is guaranteed, and there are promotions and offers that attract shoppers, it says.

"The 1 Card" members can enjoy 10-per-cent discounts, in addition to Italy’s 10-per-cent sales-tax refund for tourists.

This year, there is an International Boarding Pass Privilege programme, held in partnership with Thai Airways International.

Passengers who shop at La Rinascente can show their boarding pass and passport to get 10-per-cent discount vouchers until the end of the year.

Throughout the year, sales are expected to grow steadily if the euro remains weak. There are also two big events being held in Italy this year, the Milan Expo that began on May 1 and the Venice Bienniale, a famous art event that kicked off last weekend and runs until November.

In addition, the Fondazione Prada museum, dedicated to contemporary art and culture, has opened in Milan.
