CPF implements Good Labour Practice

CPF has joined with the Departments of Labour Protection and Welfare and Livestock Development in applying Good Labour Practice (GLP) in a bid to uplift the welfare and quality of lives of stakeholders in broiler businesses.

Virachai Ratanabanchuen, chief Operating Officer, Chicken Business, Charoen Pokphand Foods (CPF) said recently that the firm is committed to bringing labour relations to the next level so that these are on par with internationally accepted standards.
GLP is thus being applied throughout the entire value chain to ensure that the practice is observed from the feed mill to primary processing. This guarantees that workers involved in the CPF broiler value chain are treated according to internationally accepted standards. Consumers and international buyers can rest assured that there will be no issues with regard to forced or slave labour.
CPF has developed GLPs for the entire broiler operation from the farm through to processing plant comparable with international standards. This year, CPF is taking a step forward in proposing GLP policies and guidelines to CPF contract growers to ensure that the entire supply chain is running well with regard to product integrity and good labour practices. More importantly, the manufacturing is transparent and traceable.
“The training was launched in Nakhon Ratchasima with 40 broiler farm owners. Further training will soon be organized in provinces across the country. Trainees sign an agreement to commit and abide by GLP principles in managing labour relations,” Virachai said.
In 2016, CPF will work with the Department of Labour Protection and Welfare and Department of Livestock Development, Ministry of Agriculture in organising a practical training programme for managers, stockmen and concerned staff. CPF wants to convey the GLP to broiler farm owners across Thailand so that they understand the GLP principles and apply these in their operations.
“The Thai broiler industry has been internationally recognised in terms of quality and integrity. A strong commitment to taking up GLP by the stakeholders will lead to sustainable development for the Thai broiler industry at large,” Virachai said.
The trainees can adopt the GLP in their workplace. CPF will appoint internal audit teams to monitor GLP practices and provide recommendations so that all farms have GLP guidelines, thus improving the quality of life of stakeholders through fair and non-discriminatory treatment regardless of their nationalities.
