TV5 revamps programming, targets 15% revenue growth

THE ROYAL THAI Army Radio and Television Station aims to see an increase of at least 15 per cent in revenue to Bt700 million next year after revamping its programming to target more specific groups of viewers such as seniors and young people.

“We have to put more focus on segmentation to make sure that our content can reach the right audience and respond accurately to the demands from our sponsors and advertisers,” Thanathip Sawangsang, programme director at TV5, said yesterday.
Fresh TV shows will be added including local news, variety and travel programmes, sitcoms and dramas, and live sports, which will make up about 40 per cent of total airtime next year.
The Army-run TV channel will also establish a team to develop its digital content and platforms to engage young audiences in recognition of the important role of digital media.
Through its social-media network managed by this digital team, TV5 will draw audience traffic by organising promotions and contests.
The station will also create its own mobile application and a video-streaming service for its mobile app, social-media outlets and its own websites.
By the end of next year, digital media services should contribute 10 per cent of its revenue.
Despite its transformation into a public broadcaster for national security, TV5 is permitted to seek revenue from paid commercials and sponsorships.
After 22 commercial digital terrestrial TV channels arrived in this broadcasting industry, TV5’s revenue was dented by the intense competition and economic slowdown.
This year’s revenue at the station is expected to stagnate at Bt600 million.
