EU-IMF Greek rescue package revised at 172.6 billion euros

FRIDAY, MARCH 16, 2012

Brussels - The actual size of the latest Greek rescue package totals 172.6 billion euros (225.7 billion dollars), nearly 43 billions more than previously thought, official documents showed Friday.

So far, European Union and International Monetary Fund (IMF) officials had spoken of a 130-billion-euro bailout. But several international media had calculated in the past few days that the aid for Athens would actually be bigger.

On Friday, the European Financial Stability Facility (EFSF), the eurozone's bailout fund, released a table indicating that 24.4 billion euros from the first rescue package would be added to the total, covering Greece's needs until the end of 2014.

Beyond that date, the IMF is planning to loan an extra 8.2 billion euros - taking the total assistance package for Greece to 172.6 billion euros.

The Washington-based IMF confirmed on Thursday that it would contribute 28 billion euros to the second Greek bailout.

Of the total sum, 35.5 billion euros has already been distributed in the form of EFSF bonds to Greek private creditors - to reward them for taking part in a debt write-off operation worth around 105 billion euros.

In addition, the Greek government will be given 48 billion euros this year to recapitalize its banks - with an initial sum of 25 billion euros to be made available immediately, the EFSF said.//DPA
