London - Bee Gees singer and songwriter Robin Gibb has died of cancer at the age of 62, his family in Britain said early Monday.

Gibb, who sold more than 200 million records and wrote dozens of hits over five decades, formed a successful team with brothers Maurice and Barry. They began to sing together at an early age.
The Bee Gees, who rose to fame in the late 1960s, were likened to the Beatles for their catchy melodies and huge sales. They re-invented themselves as a disco band in the 1970s.
Their hit songs include Massachusetts, I've Gotta Get A Message To You, Lonely Days, How Can You Mend A Broken Heart, How Deep Is Your Love and Stayin' Alive.
"The family of Robin Gibb, of the Bee Gees, announce with great sadness that Robin passed away following his long battle with cancer and intestinal surgery," a statement said.//DPA
