The Thai consulate general in New York is closely monitoring the progress of hurricane Sandy, which hit much of the New Jersey and Delaware coast in the US on Monday.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Damrong Kraikruan said consulate staff were keeping track of and coordinating with Thais living in the metropolitan area as well as with Thai associations and Buddhist temples. He said the consulate general has prepared measures and procedures in case of emergency.
Damrong said there are some 30,000 to 40,000 Thais living in New York City and up to 10,000 in nearby areas, who could be affected by the hurricane.
He said that Thai nationals could contact the consulate at any time, and that help was also on offer by some networks set up by Thais living in the US. He said he believed all Thai citizens had been informed of the storm surge and were probably prepared.
