Airport in Indonesia's second city reopens after volcanic eruption
Jakarta - The airport in Indonesia's second-largest city has reopened after being closed because of a volcanic eruption on Java island, officials said Sunday.
The Juanda international airport in Surabaya reopened Saturday night and activities returned to normal Sunday, said Rikora Harjo, an official of airport operator PT Angkasa Pura I.
Mount Kelud in East Java province erupted late Thursday, killing four people and spewing ash and rock that covered much of the island. More than 56,000 people were displaced.
The eruption forced the closure of seven airports on Java, resulting in the cancellation of hundreds of flights. Most have since reopened.
The airport in Yogyakarta, the country's second tourism destination, remained closed to allow workers to clean up volcanic ash, the Transportation Ministry said.
