123-dollar minimum wage proposed for Cambodia's garment workers

Phnom Penh (dpa) - Cambodian garment workers are to get a salary rise of 23 dollars per month, taking their minimum wage to 123 dollars, if the government accepts a proposal made Wednesday by government, industry and union representatives.

The new salary is 3 dollars above what the government considers a poverty wage.
The Labour Advisory Committee (LAC), comprised of 14 government, seven factory and seven union officials, agreed on the figure, which now government approval.
Unions had proposed 140 dollars, while employers suggested 110dollars and the government officials 121 dollars, which was upped on Wednesday to 123 dollars.
Ath Thorn, president of the Cambodia Labour Confederation and the Coalition of Cambodian Apparel Workers Democratic Union, told dpa that the 123-dollar proposal received 16 votes from the 25 members present, while the union proposal of 140 dollars received only two votes."
