THE BANGKOK Metropolitan Adminis-tration will dispatch a 600-strong security unit comprising Army, police and BMA law enforcers to 20 spots in Khlong Thom to better regulate street vendors.

Wallop Suwannadee, chief adviser to the Bangkok governor, said yesterday that the spots included Mahachak, Chao Kham Rop and Mangkorn roads to the Plubplachai Road five-way junction.
Wallop said the security personnel would be dispatched to the areas from 8am to 4pm on weekdays and 6am to midnight on weekends from March 2 to May 31.
The operation’s coordination centre will be located near Central Hospital and its sub-centre will be located near Kasikornbank’s Thanon Seu Pa branch.
Wallop said the aim of the operation was to regulate vendors by prohibiting them from selling goods on footpaths or roads outside leniency zones, thereby helping ease traffic congestion.
As a result, the Khlong Thom night weekend market, which has sold vintage goods on a footpath for decades will open for the last time this weekend.
Pol Maj-General Wichai Sangprapai, another adviser to the BMA governor, said many senior government officials agreed with the BMA’s regulation of street vendors in all areas and urged the security personnel to perform their duty purposely, despite the likelihood of protests by Khlong Thom street vendors.
