Prayut suspends setting up of new Law Reform Commission

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha used Article 44 to suspend the selection process of a new Law Reform Commission of Thailand and dismiss the current Law Reform Commission, effective yesterday.

The Royal Gazette yesterday published the PM’s order number 20/2558 suspending the selection process of the new Law Reform Commission. There had earlier been an announcement that applications were being accepted for the new commission after the current members ended there term on May 12 in accordance with the Law Reform Act 2010.
Since the provisional charter already has organisations tasked with reforming the country’s legal and justice system, Prayut believes it is suitable to suspend the selection process for the Law Reform Commission, to ensure that the reform process is in line with the new charter.
Prayut’s order says that the Law Reform Commission that had has been serving in accordance with Article 12 of the Legal Reform Committee Act can be dismissed effective yesterday.
The order said that while the new Law Reform Commission is yet to be appointed, the Office of the Law Reform Commission should carry out its work in support of the Council of State or other duties as required by the PM. It is also to work under the supervision of the prime minister.
