The deal was signed when Dongfeng Group chairman Zhu Yanfeng visited Renault's research and development centre in Paris recently.
As part of the joint venture between the companies the Dongfeng-branded Fluence will be built at a plant in Wuhan from 2017.
The car will be sold in the Chinese market only.
The electric variant of the Fluence is driven by a 70-kilowatt motor which is powered by a 22-kilowatt-hour li-ion battery pack.
The four-door limousine with electric power was never a strong seller in Europe and it was withdrawn from sale in France in 2014.
Together with Nissan, Renault is one of the world's more successful suppliers of electric cars in various shapes and sizes.
Dongfeng Renault Automotive Company (DRAC) head Jacques Daniel said the Chinese Fluence project underscored Renault's commitment to reducing global emissions.
