Pol General Wut Liptapanlop presented the seized cars to Malaysian Central Investigation Bureau chief DCP Mohmad Bin Salleh and Ambassador of Malaysia to Thailand Nazirah Hussain during a ceremony at the Royal Thai Police head office in Bangkok.
Wut said the Thai government placed much importance on the crackdown on bilateral cooperation with Malaysia to fight transnational car-thieves. Last year, Thai police returned 75 stolen cars to Malaysia, he said.
The Malaysian CIB chief said around 16,000 cars and motorcycles were stolen each year in Malaysia – and about a third were reportedly smuggled into Thailand. The rest went to other destinations such as Dubai, Indonesia and Singapore, where they can be resold at much cheaper prices than legal imports. He urged buyers to beware of unusually cheap vehicles, as they might be stolen.
