Court of Appeal to hear case of jailed student activist Jatupat
The father of student activist Jatupat “Pai Dao Din” Boonpatraraksa will appeal the Khon Kaen Provincial Court’s decision to reject his son’s bail requests.
Next week’s appeal will be the first to be made with the Court of Appeal, Region IV, after the provincial court had rejected bail requests six consecutive times.
Jatupat was charged and detained after he shared a BBC article deemed to have insulted the monarchy last December. He was accused of violate the lese majeste and computer crime laws.
He was briefly released on bail, but his bail was revoked after investigators filed a complaint with the court alleging that he broke his bail conditions. His lawyers then kept filing new bail requests.
Jatupat’s father Viboon Boonpatraraksa said the lawyers were drafting the appeal request for the Court of Appeal.
He said he wanted the higher court to examine the bail rejections.
After the court had repeatedly rejected the bail requests, Jatupat’s lawyers increased the bail bond amount from Bt400,000 to Bt700,000 and had senior figures, including noted philosophere and social critics Sulak Sivaraksa, endorsed the request.
