Bangkok joins ‘lights off’ campaign tonight
People nationwide have been urged to turn off all unused lights for one hour on Saturday night in a campaign aimed at reducing global warming.
The 60+ Earth Hour Campaign 2017, under the theme “Lights off for the World to Change the Future”, will be jointly organised by the Ministry of Energy, Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) and the Environmental Education for Sustainable Development Foundation (Thailand) along with government and private sector partners.
The campaign, organised simultaneously with 187 nations and 7,000 cities worldwide, calls for turning off unnecessary lights for one hour on Saturday from 8.30pm to 9.30pm.
The target this year is to reduce the use of electricity in Bangkok by up to 2,000 megawatts.
Lights at important landmarks such as the Temple of Dawn, the Giant Swing and on main roads such as Silom, Ratchadaphisek, Khao San, Yaowarat, and New Phetchaburi will also be turned off as a symbolic gesture.
Bangkok has been taking part in the 60+ Earth Hour campaign since 2008.
