Located near the Khok Wua intersection on Rajdamneon Klang Road, the four-storey Bangkok City Library Building is operated by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA).
City Hall Governor Pol General Assawin Kwanmuang presided over the soft launch on Friday to test the service system and expressed his overall satisfaction with the arrangements.
The library will be officially opened on April 28 by Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn.
Photos of the new library were posted and circulated on social media. Many said they were expecting such a library and were delighted that they will have a good place where they could read good books.
The library currently stores 41,053 books and has a capacity of over 100,000 books. Members of the public have been encouraged to donate books to the library.
The Bangkok City Library spans 4,880 square metres, making it the largest of the capital’s 36 public libraries. It’s also the only one to have a section for Braille and audio books.
Those interested in becoming members can do so by showing their Thai national ID, student ID or civil servant ID cards. Those under 15 will have to pay Bt5 yearly membership fee while others will pay Bt10.
The library will be open Tuesdays to Saturdays from 8am-9pm and on Sundays from 9am-8pm. It will be closed on Mondays and public holidays.
The four-storey building belongs to the Crown Property Bureau.
Bangkok was selected as World Book Capital 2013 by an international committee made up of representatives from the publishing world and Unesco.
