Songkran marks a traditional Thai New Year, with a long holiday period. People usually spend time with their families during the celebrations, which means a huge number of people returning to their home provinces.
“On Saturday, the number of our passengers soared above 135,000,” Transport Co announced.
It believed about 120,000 more passengers would travel by bus on Sunday, raising the number of passengers between April 1 and 9 to almost one million.
“We have added 1,350 bus trips a day in preparation for the Songkran festival,” the company added.
On Sunday, traffic from Bangkok began to slow down in Nakhon Ratchasima province – a gateway to the Northeast.
Tailbacks stretched for more than 10 kilometres on the Mitrapab Road in the province’s Pak Chong district.
