The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has accepted the request of some 150 squatter families on a canal on Soi Thonglor in Bangkok’s Vadhana district to stay until the middle of next year.

The 150 families in three communities, who are encroaching on Klong Peng, had asked the BMA for time to stay until the middle of next year so that they could save money to buy new homes before they move out.
The Klong Peng Pattana community comprising 70 houses, the Leelanuch community with 50 houses and the Thonglor police station community with 44 houses have been built on the banks of the canal over an 800-metre section from Thonglor Police Station to Thonglor Soi 10.
Vadhana district director Boontham Huiprasert said the communities encroached on the canal, which is used for draining floodwaters. He said their houses blocked the flow of water and the communities polluted the canal with litter and household wastewater.
Boontham said 14 families had already moved out while 150 other families have asked for a grace period.
The vacant areas following the relocation of the 14 families will be turned into small parks, the district director added.
