The unusual pink riceberry paddy that grew in Phitsanulok province was caused by induced mutation, not a spontaneous mutation, the director of the Rice Science Centre and Rice Gene Discovery Unit, Prof Apichart Vanavichit, said.
An experiment had been conducted since 2009 by using aromatic black rice in a fast-neutron reactor, which had resulted in the purplish pink rice leaves. The centre will sell them legally as an ornamental plant in the near future.
