Singapore 'best in Asia for mothers and babies'
Singapore is the best place to be a mother in Asia, an annual worldwide report found. The Save the Children report also named Singapore as the safest place in Asia for children to be born in.
The State of the World's Mothers report compared the status of mothers and their children between 176 countries. It found that Singapore is ranked the 15th-best place in the world to be a mother, based on health, education and economic status, and the health and nutrition of children. This puts the city-state ahead of all Asian nations. Overall, Finland was deemed the best place in the world to be a mother.
In determining where the safest place for children to be born was, the agency looked at the number of deaths within the first days for every 1,000 live births. In Singapore, the rate is less than 0.5 deaths for every 1,000 live births. Globally, one million children die each year within the first day.
Mike Novell, regional head of Save the Children, noted that Singapore has skilled health workers in antenatal care, delivery of babies and post-natal care.
