Codeshare with Garuda aimed to boost regional traffic

Myanmar Airways International (MAI) and Garuda Indonesia have reached a code share agreement, which will allow passengers between Myanmar and Indonesia with seamless and convenient connections through the international gateways of Singapore and Bangkok.

 
Under the agreement, Garuda Indonesia will place its GA marketing code on Myanmar Airways International's flights between Bangkok - Yangon (vv) and Singapore - Yangon (vv). In turn, Myanmar Airways International will place its 8M marketing code on Garuda Indonesia's operations between Jakarta - Bangkok (vv) and Jakarta - Singapore (vv). 
In a statement, Garuda, the national airline of Indonesia which is on the course of corporate restructuring, said that through this partnership there will be more travel options for the increasing number of passengers travelling between the two countries.
“(This code share is), expected to boost trade and tourism activities between the two countries and passengers will be offered a wider choice of destinations as well as greater flexibility and convenience when travelling between Yangon and major cities in Indonesia,” it said in a statement.
The agreement was reached on November 25. The signing of the agreement was carried out by Garuda Indonesia EVP Sales and Marketing Erik Meijer and Myanmar Airways International Managing Director U Si Thu, and was also witnessed by the Indonesian Ambassador to Myanmar Ito Sumardi, the Myanmar Ambassador to Indonesia U San Myint Oo, and President & CEO of Garuda Indonesia Emirsyah Satar.
The codeshare flights are targeted to be available for implementation in December 2014.
Operating with seven Airbus A320s, MAI has entered into similar agreements with other airlines.
The carrier has had codesharing agreements with South Korea’s two major airlines – Korean Air and Asiana Airlines – since last year and began chartered flights to Incheon in February this year.
The carrier also signed an aviation agreement with the United Arab Emirates on March 10 and has said it will begin flights to the country next year. Besides Osaka and Seoul, it also flies to Bangkok, Gaya, Guangzhou, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and two cities in Cambodia: Phnom Penh and Siem Reap.
