Polls show that England was the second favourite to win the cup among punters here and, besides, everyone was really looking forward to seeing the patented Wayne Rooney “hairspray celebration” again.
The bizarre ritual – which had its premiere after Rooney scored the winning goal against Ukraine – had served to distract media commentators from making fun of the striker’s silly hair transplant and, more importantly, silenced criticism about England’s lack of team unity.
How did pretending to apply hairspray on the pitch accomplish that? The comic antic was Rooney’s way of thanking Andy Carroll of Manchester United’s rival Liverpool, who’d loaned him his hairspray in the locker room. “I used a bit of Andy’s product before the game,” Rooney told the Telegraph. “He asked me to score a header. And hopefully I’ll end up with hair like him!”
The hairspray celebration signalled England’s entry into the quarterfinals, but apparently the well-groomed Italians just weren’t interested. At least we have evidence of teamwork on the England squad. Hopefully it will still be there for World Cup 2014.
Near-truths
Many people expected Surang Prempree to join Channel 3 when she left BBTV Channel 7 last December, but she kept everyone in suspense. Now it seems she is indeed at least ready to place her imprint on Channel 3.
We’ve heard that Surang’s production studio, Chan 25 Co, is co-producing a soap opera called “Lub Luang Lorn” for Channel 3. It stars Prachakorn Piyasakulkaew and Miss Universe Thailand 2012.
So the gossip about Surang moving to 3 was wrong – but, like all gossip, it was nearly right.
