British DJ Leeroy Thornhill, co-founder of the Prodigy – one the history’s biggest electronic acts – will be rumpling the sheets at Bed Supperclub on Thursday with his breakbeat, dubstep and other cool crunching sounds.
Anyone who saw his Bangkok show last year won’t be missing this one.
The Prodigy’s dancer and keyboard wizard, Thornhill walked away in 2000 to work on his own material. As the Longman (he’s about two metres tall), he released several EPs that contained such notable tracks like “Dreamers”, “The Suspect” and “Rock It”.
He now DJs at large venues and warmed up the crowd for his old band on the “Their Law” tour. His music tends to overpower the fact that he’s a brilliant dancer, owing a debt to James Brown, America’s “Godfather of Soul”, but more often described as a “technical running on the spot”.
Thornhill’s moves supposedly were a major influence in the development of the Melbourne Shuffle underground rave dance style. Though he doesn’t dance much as a DJ, you might still see a few fantastic moves.
Leeroy grew up on punk music thanks to his big sister’s fascination with the Buzzcocks, the Clash and the rest. He spent his spare time at raves in Essex during the early ’90s, where he came to contact with Keith Flint. The two formed a double-act to put on music-dance shows and later, with Liam Howlett, amalgamated as the Prodigy, one of the most influential pioneers in the “big beat” genre.
Thornhill’s latest work involves the nu skool breaks record label Electric Tastebuds, to which he signed breakbeat act the Wrongstar Society. In 2008 Thornhill’s Smash Hi-Fi Project (with Boogie Army’s Martin Hoerger) released the video for “Everything U Need”, directed by Philip Carrer and Bleeding Apple.
His act on Thursday is supported by local star Marco Van De Burn.
