For the second year running, Thailand was chosen as the destination for the Red Bull Singha Race of Champions event, beating many other countries. The race brings together the world’s greatest drivers from Formula 1, World Rally, Le Mans, MotoGP, Nascar, IndyCar, Touring cars and the X-Games to decide the champion of the champions.
While the race will be an exhilarating experience by itself, the event will also feature special performances by Thai artists and other performers. Legendary rock duo Asanee and Wasan will be joined by pop stars Lydia and Bee Peerapat for a full one-hour performance prior to the race, preparing the audience and raising their heartbeat for the excitement to follow.
On December 14, Lydia and Bee Peerapat will perform for one hour before the ROC Nations Cup, where Thailand’s best drivers will compete for the champion’s title. The next day, a one-hour special performance by Asanee and Wasan will excite the crowd before the Race of Champions finals.
The rules of ROC are unique. Drivers must compete using the same type of car, and are not told beforehand which type of car will be used. This creates a level playing field in which the drivers can only use talent and skill to emerge victorious. The supercars selected for use in the ROC include the Toyota GT86, Audi R8 LMS, VW Scirocco R-Cup, Euro Racecar, KTM X-Bow, and the all new Ariel Atom.
Two new entrants to the race have just been announced. The first is Mick Doohan, a five time 500 cc MotoGP world champion. The Australian dominated the sport in the 1990s, collecting a haul of more than 50 wins and five straight 500cc MotoGP world championships from 1994 to 1998. The Australian will partner four-time V8 Supercar Champion Jamie Whincup for Team Australia in the ROC Nations Cup. The ROC features racing legends from all over the world, including seven-time F1 World Champion Michael Schumacher, nine-time Le Mans winner Tom Kristensen, newly crowned World Rally Champion Sebastien Ogier, and four-time V8 Supercar champion Jamie Whincup. Former F1 drivers Karun Chandhok and Narain Karthikeyan will race for Team India. Three-time ROC ‘Champion of Champions’ Mattias Ekstrom will also be participating in the event.
Team Thailand will be represented by Tin Sritrai and Sandy Stuvik. Thais Nattawut Charoensukawattana and Nattapong Hortongkum will race for team Toyota.
