A terrifying lurch away from traditional American tolerance

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 16, 2016

When I was a boy growing up in America I used to sing: “This is my country, land of the free. This is my country, no two agree.”

As an American I took pride in living in a country where I could have friends who were politically a hundred miles to the right of me and others who were a hundred miles to my left. We could hate certain ideas yet love the people behind them. But, thanks to Donald Trump, the America I loved no longer exists.
Trump refers to Mexicans as “rapists” and unattractive women as “fat pigs”. He insults all Muslims at a time when we can’t win the war on terror without their support. Not even the physically handicapped are spared the ridicule and insults of this evil and horrible man. And I never dreamed I’d see the day when a candidate for president would call a supporter a patriot for sucker-punching a non-violent black demonstrator and threatening to kill him.
Although I still doubt Trump will get elected, if he does he’ll be more dangerous than Adolph Hitler, who at least didn’t have nuclear weapons.
Quite frankly, I’ve never been so terrified in my life.
