Fierce mother croc snared and returned to wild in Nakhon Sawan

Last week, residents of Phra Non subdistrict in Nakhon Sawan’s Muang district were afraid to leave their homes after a female crocodile was spotted guarding her eggs nearby.

The 3-metre-long crocodile was seen tending to her eggs near the Monthong Shrine, which is next to the province’s famous Bueng Boraphet.

The 224-square-kilometre Bueng Boraphet in the east of Nakhon Sawan is the largest freshwater swamp in central Thailand and is home to many water birds and wildlife.

After being alerted of the crocodile, officials from the Region 12 Wildlife Conservation Office spent about 20 minutes on Sunday (June 13) to snare it. She was then taken to the Nakhon Sawan Fresh Water Fishery Research and Development Centre to be treated, before being released in the Bueng Boraphet Wildlife Sanctuary.

The sanctuary is home to many other crocodiles and officials hope she will mate again as the 10 eggs she had been guarding so fiercely were found to be infertile.

The sanctuary is far from human communities and is flooded all year round, making it perfect for crocodiles.
