Liam fought illness for many months with great determination and strength, but within the last few days his condition deteriorated rapidly.
Born in 1945 in Dublin, Ireland, he lived in Thailand for more than 40 years as a Thai citizen. He began his career as general manager with the original PCS Company in 1969 and became chairman in 1995 upon the death of the late chairman, Major General MR Kukrit Pramoj.
Originally the company was part of the Inchcape Group of Companies, but in 1989 Liam launched a management buyout, and the OCS Group, UK became shareholders. PCS is now an associate company of OCS Group.
Under Liam’s directorship the company has grown from a team of five offering only pest control services to its present size of more than 23,000 staff providing a “one -stop service” for property and facility support and maintenance needs.
Liam was actively involved in community projects in Thailand, including holding the positions of secretary and director of the Medical Scholarship Foundation under the auspices of HRH Princess Kalayani; director of Cheshire Homes Thailand; director of the Support the Children Foundation Chiang Mai; director of HRH the Princess Mother’s Pra Maeta Projects; and vice president of the Bangkok Nursing Home Association.
Liam also worked with the British Embassy in supporting the Ploenchit Fair for more than 30 years. The event raises funds to assist underprivileged people in Thailand via the British Community in Thailand Foundation for the Needy (BCTFN).
He also established and chaired the Thailand Business Coalition on Aids in 1991, as a non-profit alliance serving business interests and addressing business concerns related to HIV and Aids through links with businesses, non-government and government organisations. Moreover, he found the PCS Foundation for social development in Thailand in 2005, following the tsunami disaster the previous year.
He was also the founding sponsor of the Junior Dublin Literary Awards for Thailand, organised by The Nation and Nation Junior, now in its 8th year as the leading annual English essay contest.
A man of compassion, Liam was also a lover of the arts. He opened a gallery in Pattaya to promote both Thai and international artists.
Liam’s funeral rites are being held every evening until Friday at Wat Thad Thong.
