IBM Cognos TM1, IBM Cognos BI with WISH Consulting to improve back-end operational processes and drive smarter decisions

Gulf JP, a major independent power producer in Thailand, has selected IBM Cognos TM1 and IBM Cognos Business Intelligence, along with consulting and professional services from WISH Consulting, an active IBM partner for IBM Business Analytics Solutions. These newly-deployed solutions will help improve budget planning and forecasting, facilitate financial consolidation, provide business insights for smarter decisions, and eventually drive strong and sustainable value–driven business growth.

Data is exploding in volume, variety and velocity. Both structured and unstructured information will continue to grow at astronomical rates. This creates a tremendous opportunity for organizations to make timely decisions and achieve business goals. Organizations that are able to leverage can use this Big Data, will be better positioned to react and satisfy customer expectations faster with the deeper insights gained. The challenge is figuring out how to analyze all the data, glean the insights on customer needs, and being able to meet those needs and achieve business targets with limited budgets.

Similar to most industries, consumers of energy and utilities have tremendous expectations for future energy services. Historically, the relationship between utilities and consumers has been rather lopsided – utilities had the power, both literally and figuratively. But the confluence of climate change concerns, rising energy costs and technology advances leading to greater consumer involvement is now radically redefining that relationship. IBM’s recent surveys of 1,900 energy consumers and nearly 100 industry executives reveals major changes underway – a more heterogeneous consumer base, evolving industry models and a stark departure from a decades-old value chain.

With IBM Business Analytics Solutions, energy and utilities companies such as Gulf JP would be able to ready itself for a participatory network that enables customers to choose from a wide variety of supply options, and actively manage their consumption. Gulf would also be able to perform real-time management and analysis of data flowing in from smart-grid and smart-meter instrumentation, and optimize asset location based on geography, meteorology, and supply chain management.

Ply Samudavanija, Vice President- Information Technology, Gulf JP Co., said that as a major independent power producer, Gulf JP owns nine large and small natural gas power plants, serving the Electricity Generation Authority of Thailand (EGAT) and clients in main industrial zones of Thailand. One of its priorities is to address clients’ power demands more effectively.
To achieve better business results, Gulf JP plans to enhance every aspect of its power generation projects, especially in the areas of technology. The company therefore looked to deploy IT solutions that would help improve and accelerate its business processes, and achieve more accurate analyses for its sales and marketing, production cost and accounting information. Gulf JP eventually selected IBM Cognos TM1 and IBM Cognos BI, together with consulting and professional services from WISH Consulting, an active IBM partner.

The IBM Business Analytics solutions will address three main dimensions of the company’s requirements, namely business solutions, software solutions, and solutions that deliver business insights. With a clear research and development roadmap for IBM Cognos TM1 and BI, these business analytics solutions can accommodate a multitude of business requirements and capabilities.

Jadesada Kraisingkorn, Country Manager, Software Group, IBM Thailand Co., Ltd., said, “Gulf JP has selected IBM Business Analytics solutions to assist in its planning and forecasting strategies. With these solutions in place, Gulf would be able to align their resources more dynamically with their long-term business growth. As one of the leading business analytics solutions provider, IBM is positioned to enable Gulf’s business transformation and increase its operational efficiency further.”
