Samsung Galaxy S III smart phone debuts this week

Samsung is counting on its much-hyped Galaxy S III smart phone to be launched in Thailand this week to help cement the South Korean mobile-phone maker's image as a leading smart-phone brand in the market.

Gregory Lee, president and chief executive officer of Samsung Asia, said he was hopeful that the latest model would outsell its two predecessors, the Galaxy S and Galaxy S II, in the global market. He made the remark on the sidelines of the unveiling of the Galaxy S III in Australia last week.

Smart phones are the most exciting mobile-phone category in the world right now and the segment is growing very fast globally. The Samsung brand is also gaining clout thanks to its smart-phone products.
The Galaxy S III will make its formal splash in Thailand on Thursday.
Wichai Pornpratang, vice president for the telecommunication business of Thai Samsung Electronics Co, said that less than a month after its introduction in 20 markets – including Britain, Germany, Australia, Indonesia and the Middle East – the Galaxy S III achieved pre-orders of more than 9 million units on all continents.
He said his mission was not just to sell smart phones but also to educate consumers to make the most out of the devices. His other mission is to make consumers think of Samsung as the first brand that comes to mind when they want to buy a smart phone.
Mobile-phone makers are racing to introduce their latest smart phones in the Thai market.
Taiwan-based HTC will start marketing its HTC One S in the country on June 13.
Nokia Thailand is banking on its Lumia line of the Finnish company’s first smart phones with the Windows Phone platform, which are already available in Thailand, to help it become the dominant player in the smart phone segment in a few years.
Of the forecast 15 million mobile phones to be sold in Thailand this year, more than 2 million will be smart phones.
