The recall related to the steering affects 1.5 million cars from the 2000 to 2011 models in Japan. It also includes 670,000 units inthe US and 496,000 units in Europe, spokesman Joichi Tachikawa said.
Toyota separately will also recall 350,000 cars in the US, 175,000in Japan and 83,000 in Europe to repair water pumps, he said.
Some cars are affected by both recalls. Tachikawa said no injuries and or accidents have been reported.
Toyota's worldwide image as a producer of high-quality cars has taken a hit from a series of recalls, the latest coming last month with the recall of 7.43 million cars, which nearly equal Toyota's total annual sales. That recall was for sticking power windows that pose a potential fire hazard.
In 2009 and 2010, Toyota recalls totalled more than 10 million cars that could have been affected by steering and a sticking accelerator.
