Most educators see important role of digital tools in education: survey

An opinion survey of educators in Southeast Asia found that most educators realize the technology and digital tools play an important role in fostering creativity among students.

The survey was carried out by Adobe Systems among 102 educators from Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam between February and arch 10 2013.

The survey, titled ‘State of Creativity in Education’, was part of Adobe’s Asia Pacific-wide study, it announced.
It said the educators represented organisations offering primary, secondary, senior secondary and higher education as well as vocational courses.
The survey found that 91 per cent of respondents felt that technology and digital tools play an important role in fostering creativity among students.
It said 80 per cent respondents are teachers while another 20 per cent are administrators, heads of institutions and consultants. The key findings of the study were announced at the 8th annual Adobe Education Leadership Forum taking place in Phuket, Thailand on March 20-22 2013.
The survey found that 73 per cent of the educators strongly felt that they should be creative regardless of the subjects they teach.
The respondents said they spent 59 per cent of their time fostering creative skills in their classroom in the last year, but ideally they wanted to spend 70 per cent for the purpose.
The survey also found that 37 per cent believe that the current education system in Southeast Asia is outdated or restrictive or both.
And 29 per cent of the respondents strongly felt fostering creativity is the educators’ primary responsibility while 32 per cent felt it is the parents’ responsibility.
The survey found that 58 per cent of educators believe tools and training for educators are the most critical need to promote creativity.’
Commenting on the findings of the survey, Peter McAlpine, Senior Director – Education Sales for APAC, Adobe said, “Creativity is no longer an elective for educators, students and the education organisations. It is a mandatory requirement for a successful future. The classroom is evolving from the traditional notions of learning, to a more creative platform of understanding. Educators and students are redefining how knowledge is acquired and shared. This state of creativity survey gives us insight into the mindsets of educators and the barriers they face while trying to foster creativity in their students.”
